Em um contexto internacional no qual a crise global capitalista afeta mais diretamente aos países europeus, especialmente os da zona mediterrânea, e a única reação dos governos consiste nas mesmas receitas que já foram provadas no resto do mundo, que só levam ao empobrecimento, a desocupação estrutural, a marginalização e à precarização da vida das maiorias sociais que vivem do seu trabalho, grandes movimentos de protesto começaram a reagir nos países “desenvolvidos” mais afetados pela crise, recolocando no centro do cenário a necessidade de que a gestão da economia não apenas contemple as necessidades sociais, mas que esteja nas mãos dos trabalhadores e trabalhadoras.

AFIT’s 34th annual meeting is held in conjunction with the 55th Annual Conference of the Western Social Science Association (WSSA). The financial crisis revealed its first signs over five years ago, on August 9, 2007, when BNP Paribas suspended payment on three of its funds. It has since morphed into the deepest US and then world economic crisis since the Great Depression. The “green shoots” of recovery of some Third World economies, that the IMF had acclaimed in 2010, had withered within a year. By 2012 it was admitted that the “world recovery had stalled”, as even the handful of large, better-‐performing, developing economies slowed. But, ever upbeat except when imposing adjustment, the IMF predicts not only an improved 2013 but continual yearly growth over the following four years as well.

Finance and the Realization of Value in the “Social Factory”
This session explores the changing role of money and finance in the realization of value outside traditional sites of production, and through social processes and activities not historically associated with value production. Over the last three decades geographers have documented dramatic transformations in the nature of labor in affluent capitalist states. These transformations have been attended by a growth in insecure, casualized, and irregular employment; a blurring of work and non-work time as well as a rise in the prominence of “entrepreneurial,” “affective,” “creative” and “immaterial” labour.

“Attacking the Citadel: Making Economics Fit for Purpose“

Economics as a science ought to be in disarray. Its vastly dominant mainstream models and policy recommendations based on rational representative agents for example should have suffered a devastating blow in response to the recent world financial crisis and even be seen as part of its cause. Whilst initiatives such as the Institute for New Economic Thinking or the foundation of the outspokenly pluralist World Economic Association demonstrate that there is now more room for dissenting views among economists and in the general public, it is still uncertain whether a more open and fruitful economics will prevail within the discipline. What can be learned from the past, including the experience of the Keynesian revolution, is that a major crisis can indeed challenge outdated theories, although it is salutary to bear in mind that the stagflation of the 1970s ultimately underpinned the emergence of the new classical economics. Its mark remains heavy on the discipline even where its extreme postures are rejected.
First South Asian Historical Materialism Conference – New Delhi, April 2013
The Delhi HM Conference “New Cultures of the Left”, the first South Asian Historical Materialism Conference, will be held at the Conference Centre, Delhi University, on 3-4 April 2013. The conference occurs against several backgrounds that make the revival of the left and the reemergence of Marxist and other forms of radical theory and politics imperative. These ‘backgrounds’ include the massive convulsions in the world economy from the financial crash of 2008 onwards; the great uprisings in the Arab world that dominated the whole of 2011 with their remarkable mass-based struggles for democracy; the emergence in the West of spontaneous forms of resistance to Austerity politics and its fierce attacks on the lives of millions of people both in and out of employment.
PCB: 90 Anos – Debate Cedem-Unesp
O PCB foi fundado na cidade de Niterói no dia 25 de março de 1922 e conseguiu manter sua existência abaixo de repressão por décadas. Foi uma organização que, em torno da figura de Luis Carlos Prestes, arrebatou “as massas” após o fim do Estado Novo e chegou a ter 10% dos votos para uma eleição presidencial, tornando-se reduto político de importantes intelectuais brasileiros como Astrojildo Pereira, Graciliano Ramos, Jorge Amado, Di Cavalcanti, Oscar Niemeyer, João Saldanha, Caio Prado Júnior, Mario Lago, Dyonélio Machado, Mario Schenberg, entre outros. Desta forma, o professor Milton Pinheiro fará uma análise da a trajetória do PCB como operador político, protagonista das lutas sociais e culturais até o final dos anos 1970 e a perda da influência política que marcou os anos 1980, quando consolidou-se a crise política e orgânica do Partido mais antigo da história do Brasil.

APORDE 2012
The sixth edition of the African Programme on Rethinking Development Economics (APORDE) will be held in Johannesburg (South Africa) from 7th to the 21st of September 2012. APORDE is a high-level training programme in development economics which aims to build capacity in economics and economic policy-making. The course will run for two weeks and consist of lectures and seminars taught by leading international and African economists. This call is directed at talented African, Asian and Latin American economists, policy makers and civil society activists who, if selected, will be fully funded.

Daniel Singer Millennium Prize 2012
The Daniel Singer Millennium Prize Foundation annually recognizes an original essay that helps further socialist ideas in the tradition of Daniel Singer. The Daniel Singer Millennium Prize Foundation, Inc., is an educational foundation named after the author, journalist, historian and activist, who died in December 2000. The purpose of the Foundation is to encourage and develop ideas that enhance and extend democratic, civil and economic rights and social justice to all peoples of the world. Each year the Foundation seeks to present a cash prize to the author of an essay of not more than 5,000 words that advances Singer’s ideas and insights concerning the next stage in the struggle toward these goals, as delineated in his last book, Whose Millennium? Theirs or Ours? The deadline for submissions is August 31. An international panel of judges, which includes none of the trustees, reads the submitted essays. The award (assuming a worthy essay is found) is announced in December. The winner is then invited to develop a public lecture based on the winning essay.

Seminário Paul Singer 80 Anos
No próximo dia 24 de março o professor Paul Singer completará 80 anos. Para comemorar esta data algumas pessoas e entidades (Faculdade de Economia da USP, Núcleo de Economia Solidária da USP, Incubadora Tecnológica de Cooperativas Populares da USP, equipe da Secretaria Nacional de Economia Solidária, amigos e familiares) organizarão um seminário que busca resgatar a trajetória política e intelectual do professor Singer nestes 80 anos e suas contribuições ao pensamento socialista brasileiro. Este seminário ocorrerá nos dias 22 e 23 de março de 2012 no auditório da Faculdade de Economia e Administração da USP (FEA/USP) na Universidade de São Paulo.
